Brandon Smith

The urban landscape provides the inspiration for much of Brandon Smith’s work.  His paintings capture everyday moments—reading a menu, or watching the bus go by—and sometimes have a furtive quality, carrying the viewer right into the scene.  Brandon often photographs his subjects, returning to his light-filled studio in Oakland to complete the work.

Asked why he concentrates on cityscapes, Brandon replies:  “Because that’s what I’m surrounded by.  I’m just drawn to the telephone poles, wires and buildings:  the angular compositions and horizontal and vertical lines.”
